Alberta Wind

Gumbo Lily speaks a little about some of the weather that helped shape us.

The wind, that wind, flows in our blood. It is as common as laundry blown off the line here.

"If you're not from the prairie,
you don't know the wind,
you can't know the wind.

Our cold winds of winter cut right to the core,
Hot summer wind devils can blow down the door.
As children we know as we play any game,
The wind will be there, yet we play just the same.

If you're not from the prairie,
you don't know the wind."

--Dave Bouchard, If You're Not From the Prairie

I read Gumbo Lily's post too and it spoke to my heart. We have wind here all the time. When people visit they can't believe we don't mind it...most of the time;). It does shape how you do things, but ii's really a wonderful thing...the air is super clean, summer is a little cooler, and the laundry dries FAST!

I love your posts and reading about your life on the prairie:).

Cute photos- and so very true! Actually wind is one of the reasons my husband didn't want to live in Alberta any more.

So true, I've felt more home here all because of that wind. And she is lovely. Beautiful pictures

Alberta seems like a beautiful place, I LOVE how you share it!

Those have to be the sweetest pictures ever! Love the first one of her smelling the flowers.

Thanks for sharing!

We love that prairie book so much. Thanks again for sending it.

The wind is very much a part of us here in Oklahoma as well. So much so that the song aptly describes it as "where the wind comes sweeping down the plains".

Absolutely adore that first picture. Precious, precious, precious.

Hey Cheyenne, I was visiting my hubby in CA this past weekend and we ate at a restaurant (I can never remember how to spell that word) called "Prairie Fire" and I thought of you! Its located in the Hotel we love to stay at and everything is Ag related. They have pitchforks on the walls, shovels for door handles, pictures of animals and crops and huge murals on the walls depicting farm life. Its pretty amazing. Loved the wind story. My dad's ranch was in the northern part of the state and there was never a day that the wind didn't blow. At day's end, you were covered in dirt because of it. But I loved it and wouldn't trade those memories for all the money in the world. Hugs...

Sure pretty pictures, but I hate wind, although a cool breeze is nice on a hot day when the bugs are real bad.

I love how you love where you live. We should all be so blessed. :-) We experienced wind in Wenatchee constantly unlike any I've ever experienced before. I loved it. Here we do get windstorms, but more often it's a constant breeze off the Puget Sound. Which I would LOVE if all my neighbors didn't have wind chimes.

Such sweet photos! And that prairie wind I would not know what to do with but I love how it's described by Dave.

It's mostly better to have a breeze or wind than to not.
Hope you are all well. ♥

oh the wind...I've read this book countless times and given it away when people have moved away to remind them of this amazing place.
Hope you are well.

Oh but that poem speaks truth. I just came in from a walk to the mailbox -- wind in my hair, dirt too, and a good workout walking into the wind.

Sweet, sweet photos of your daughter!
